The beginnings of civil aviation in Cluj-Napoca dates back 87 years ago to 1932, when the Military Aerodrome Someşeni started to operated flights carrying passengers. After a period of prosperity in the interwar years, Cluj airport was destroyed at the end of the Second World War, in 1944. Subsequently rebuilt and developed in successive stages, Cluj airport is today an important driver for economic development of the region.
El Aeropuerto Internacional „Avram Iancu” es el segundo más grande aeropuerto de Rumanía referente al número de pasajeros transportados después del Aeropuerto Internacional „Henri Coandă” de Bucarest, y para 2019 se estima que registrará un tráfico de 3 millones de pasajeros. The airport is located 8 km (5.0 mi) east of the city centre on the European route E576. The drive from the city centre takes about 20 minutes. CTP Cluj Napoca, the local public transport company, operates its Route No. 8 that connects the airport with the Mihai Viteazul Square in the City Center and trolleybus No. 5 to the Rail station.
